Startling new underground group spreads lack of panic! Citizens declare themselves "relatively unafraid" of threats of undeclared rationality. People can still go to France, terrorist leader says.

Article can be found HERE.

Had to help spread that around after seeing the link in another journal, amused me to no end. It's also funny cause a friend of mine that was in an old band with me ages ago was a unitarian. One time after playing a concert in the middle of nowhere i dropped him off at some sort of unitarian weekend getaway in sac on the way back to the yay area. An interesting experience indeed. lots of teenagers, wierd trancey music and distorted visuals playing on a really huge projector screen. heh.

Introduced into the house a few months ago was HR 1201, "Digital Media Consumers' Rights Act of 2005". It essentially restores fair use that was stripped away by the DMCA (digital millenium copyright act). The main points being that it would make legal the practice of defeating copyright encryption as long as its for personal and legal use. (its also about new cd copyright technology too) I miss the old days when if you had a really hard to find kick ass movie you could just copy the tape and give it to a friend or let somone borrow it. or you could legally make someone a mix tape without fear of getting sued by the RIAA. anyhoo, more info can be found here if ur bored and feel like reading:

Lawmaker Revs Up Fair-Use Crusade

HR 1201

SEC. 5. FAIR USE AMENDMENTS.

(a) Scientific Research- Subsections (a)(2)(A) and (b)(1)(A) of section 1201 of title 17, United States Code, are each amended by inserting after `title' in subsection (a)(2)(A) and after `thereof' in subsection (b)(1)(A) the following: `unless the person is acting solely in furtherance of scientific research into technological measures'.

(b) Fair Use Restoration- Section 1201(c) of title 17, United States Code, is amended--

(1) in paragraph (1), by inserting before the period at the end the following: `and it is not a violation of this section to circumvent a technological measure in order to obtain access to the work for purposes of making noninfringing use of the work'; and

(2) by adding at the end the following new paragraph:

`(5) Except in instances of direct infringement, it shall not be a violation of the Copyright Act to manufacture or distribute a hardware or software product capable of substantial noninfringing uses.'.

The trials and tribulations of EastBaySteve

My somewhat odd weekly ritual of comming in sunday afternoons to work when noone is here took a bit of a wierd twist yesturday. I was working and listening to music as usual when i realized that I needed to make a few phone calls. After a quick search around my desk I realized that it was outside in my vehicle. Just as I was about to open the door I notice out of the corner of my eye... some gang banger thug type individual hoping over the fence into the parking lot (our parking lot is completely fenced and locked, and i lock myself in when here alone) i guess I kinda did a double take but instinctively turned off the lights so i could see him and he couldnt see me. The guy walked around, went behind a few trailers.. was kinda eyeing the place. Eventually he walked to the other side of the lot where I could not see. I called the cops (which is what im supposed to do if anyone is tresspassing) and told them what was up. gave em a description and they said they were sending a few cars over. It was a little bit wierd since I was the only person there in a costco sized building (it used to be a costco, heh). the thing that urked me a bit was that the place he went to that i couldnt see was the only other entrance into the building. I kept my eye out for the cops to show up.. the problem was that the gates were closed so they wouldnt be able to drive in. I figured they would just call and ask me to go open it.

So the cops roll up and call me on the phone. I tell them that i will walk out and unlock it so they can get in since i dont see the guy anymore. so as im leaving the office I look around and see the guy way on the other side of the parking lot. He didnt see me so i went back inside and told the cop where he was and that he was right by the fence and that he would see me if i walked out. so the cop went over there to see if he could just get to the guy. well long story short... the cop calls me and says he is over there and the guy is nowhere to be seen. he asks me to walk over there and meet him by the fence and let him in. was kinda weary but i did it. I walk over there and sure enough, no thug dude.. i start talkin to the cop. I didnt have the key to the gate the dude was by and started pointing showing the cop where i had seen the guy.

that would be when i saw the dude hiding in the bushes.. scared the crap out of me. here I am on one side of the fence in a locked down parking lot right by some guy potentially trying to break in to my office.. and the cops are over on the other side of the fence not doing squat. It's not like its barbed wire.. it would have taken them 5 seconds to hop over it. anyways, they detained the guy. he was on probation for robbery and theft. Thankfully he was unarmed.

Who knows if he would have done anything. other than being a little bit urked by finding him hiding in the bushes it wasnt that big of a deal. just another random adventure in my wierd life.

Scientific theory vs. 'Intelligent Design' (creationism lite)

While taking a break from work to do a little reading I stumbled across this.. http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2004/11/30/MNGVNA3PE11.DTL

I don't usually talk about religion much as I understand everyone has his or her own views and beliefs.. and I can respect that.. I also prefer open and intelligent debate over annoying confrontations. I guess reading this article just put me in a mood to rant. Basically this school is being forced to now teach 'intelligent design' along with the theory of evolution in their science classes. I have no qualms with teaching differing opinions and letting students decide for themselves but 'intelligent design' is not science. After the Supreme Court ruled that creationism cannot be taught in public schools the religious right had to figure out some other way to teach religion in science classes.. with that came 'intelligent design'. Essentially saying that Darwin was wrong and that various forms of life including us are too complicated to have been created by nature... they had to have a higher 'designer' (read: GOD) assist in creating them. This is essentially creationism re-worded to be passed off as science.

So let's compare the 2..

Evolution: the basic idea that life has existed for billions of years and has changed over time. Documented through multiple lines of evidence that converge to tell the story of life through time. Biological evolution, simply put, is descent with modification.

Intelligent Design (ID): claims to rationally and scientifically support the existence of an unknown "intelligent designer" as the originator of organic earth-life, based on the premise that life is too complex to have originated entirely through natural selection. Their research consists of pulling up cells in a microscope and saying "see this? this is too complex to have been created by nature, it must have been created by an 'intelligent designer' (hrmmm and who could that be? lol)

[sarcasm] I wonder which one should be taught in the science class and which one should be taught in the religious studies class... anyhoo, thats my oppinion on the subject.

for the longest time there's been something missing from my life. I feel like all I do is work, sleep and occasionally go out to have a drink or hit up a party.. I've had some great times but when i reflect about the last *thinks* three or four years of my life I just don't see anything profound that I've done or at least worked on. Maybe it's because i've been in a rut, or maybe it's because I finally feel like a 'grown up'.. or possibly because I was soo different when I was younger. Well, when I say different I mean I used to be involved in many other areas. I could create, inspire and express myself in soo many different ways. I miss the old days where I: started young playing the saxophone and eventually with an orchestra, later on moving to the piano. got to start producing music just after high school.. went back to my roots playing the sax again but in a few punk/ska/swing bands. Started up my own record label and produced 5 albums. Got to work as a recording engineer at a smaller studio and even got to engineer a few tracks at one of the (then) biggest coolest recording studios in the bay area. got to help build a (now long gone)major label recording studio from the ground up. got to go on tour several times and experience some of the greatest moments of my life. Got to kick it and hang out with musicians i idolized like Joey Ramone.

Remebering those days brings a tear to my eye now. Where did it all go? If this is being grown up then I don't want it. I need to compose, create and start expressing myself again somehow. I just miss it. With my current music creating influences leaning twards composing and playing different forms of classical music i've decided to take up the violin(and maybe the viola after). I know somone with an extra full size violin that I can use..

I can't wait to get started. There are soo many things i wanna play, soo many songs i want to write. Once i get better i'd love to play with a small string group.

There is lots on my mind as of late.. lots of things to do and figure out that have nothing to do with music.. but i know that this makes me smile when i think about it and i guess thats all that really matters.

My one political post for the year (i think)

Oct. 29, 2004 | George W. Bush tried to laugh off the bulge. "I don't know what that is," he said on "Good Morning America" on Wednesday, referring to the infamous protrusion beneath his jacket during the presidential debates. "I'm embarrassed to say it's a poorly tailored shirt."

Dr. Robert M. Nelson, however, was not laughing. He knew the president was not telling the truth. And Nelson is neither conspiracy theorist nor midnight blogger. He's a senior research scientist for NASA and for Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and an international authority on image analysis. Currently he's engrossed in analyzing digital photos of Saturn's moon Titan, determining its shape, whether it contains craters or canyons.

http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2004/10/29/bulge/index.html

I don't usually buy into many conspiracy theories or wild notions... but this was interesting and a good read at the very least. The first thing that comes to my mind for me tho is common sense.. I imagine there could be better ways to hide something like that. *shrug* anyhoo, back to work.

If u send this message to ten people, a new type of buddy list will appear! It will tell u where someone is, who they're talking to. And if they have more than 1 screen name

The scarey part is that they actually believed it..

I rented the following movies last week.

Six String Samurai was certainly interesting, although left a bit to be desired.. it was nice to see a movie that was just plain odd for a change. Young Frankenstein of course is a classic.. which i think completes my mel brooks set. speaking of, i read that he is working on the sequel to Spaceballs. I also realized that it is impossible for me to return movies on time to blockbuster. It doesnt matter what I do, i ALWAYS return them late. I think i might just have to give netflix a try at some point in the future.

"better to appear scientific than holy..."

This made me chuckle.. apparently, giving up after losing the intellectual battle with creationism (read: god made everything, don't ask questions.. ha) the religious scientific (doesn't that term itself sound contradicting?) community has come up with a new plan to discredit evolution. it's called "ID", which stands for Intelligent Design. Apparently thier theory is that certain parts of the human anatomy are too complex to be created by evolution, that there must have been an "Intelligent Designer" that created these uber complex things.. which of course would be god, but apparently they're trying to keep that part out of the debate so that it will appeal to a more wide variety of people. The scary part is that they are trying to get "ID" taught in public schools. I don't mean to offend anyone religious on my LJ but I can't help how i feel, heh. I grew up a scientist with a firm belief in logic and theory. Thankfully my parents let me choose at a young age weather or not to go to church and get into religion.. needless to say i opted out on that one. I'm not knocking god or religion in general but i will admit that i think its absurd to answer any scientific question with "well.. god created it"
